New York University
Alicia Carmona is a Ph.D. candidate in socio-cultural anthropology at New York University. Born in New York City to Puerto Rican immigrants, she has been living in Argentina for the past three years to conduct fieldwork and write her doctoral thesis on the formation of Bolivian immigrant identities and communities in Buenos Aires. Her ethnographic focus within the project has been the performances and institutional practices of religious-folkloric dance fraternities, composed largely of Bolivian workers in the informal textile industry. Her academic interests include the practical construction of group and self, Latino migrations and movement, labor and leisure, and the relationship between all of these and performativity.
