Performing "Heritage": Brazil Encuentro 2005
|
Community and Performance
For ten days in March of 2005, over 400 scholars, artists, students and activists from throughout the Americas came together in Belo Horizonte, Brazil for the Hemispheric Institute's fifth Encuentro. The encuentro, whose theme was Performing Heritage: Contemporary Indigenous and Community-Based Practices, offered participants the opportunity to take part in workshops, work groups, and to attend performances, round tables and keynote addresses. This exhibition features a selection of our favorite images from the Encuentro.

Digital Photographs from the workshop led by Lorie Novak, Pedro Linger Gasiglia, Julio Pantoja, Alicia Kuri Alamillo
Participants in the week-long digital photography workshop visually explored the conference theme of "Performing Heritage" by photographing the indigenous groups and performances at the Encuentro, visualizing the absence of indigenous cultures in Belo Horizonte and the Americas, or making images of self-representation. The photographs here represent a selection of the 50+ images exhibited at the end of the Encuentro.
